Biography
Dr. Wendy Schatzberg is a professor of chemistry whose research spans nanomaterial synthesis and chemistry education. In the laboratory, she uses scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate nanoscale materials for applications in catalysis, sustainable insulation and biomedicine. In the classroom, her work explores how metacognitive strategies strengthen conceptual understanding and improve student outcomes.
Previous Teaching
Has taught chemistry at multiple levels, from undergraduate to graduate coursework, focusing on physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and science education.
Experience
- More than 20 years of teaching, curriculum design and research mentoring in chemistry and chemistry education
- Principal investigator on several National Science Foundation–funded projects
- Developer of innovative teaching strategies integrating metacognition and assessment
Research & Interests
Dr. Schatzberg’s research explores the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials as well as evidence-based chemistry education. Her materials-science work examines nanoparticles and thin-film structures using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Her education research investigates how metacognitive prompts, guided inquiry and cognitive-load theory can enhance student learning and persistence in STEM.
